CABLE LOCKS-GENERAL INFORMATION, PROS & CONS

GENERAL PURPOSE & USE
A cable lock is threaded through the action or barrel of a firearm.  If properly installed,
the cable prevents the firearm from functioning and insures the firearm is unloaded.
Cable locks offer exceptional deterrence from small children gaining use of the firearm.  Many cable locks may visually look the same or similar.  However, Pro-Lok designed our cable locks with MAJOR differences.  Pro-Lok cable locks use our exclusive, 1-piece, 1-moving part, double-sided deadbolt design.

PRIMARY BENEFITS
ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE

The primary benefit that a cable lock provides is accidental discharge protection.  A cable lock cannot be properly installed on a loaded firearm.

VISUAL DETERRENCE
An unauthorized user can easily see that the firearm is locked.  Visual deterrence alone will deter many undetermined unauthorized users from attempting to gain access to the firearm.

PRIMARY CONS
A CABLE LOCK CANNOT BE USED ON MANY FIREARMS
.
Small caliber firearms are difficult to find a cable lock that has a small enough diameter to work.  Many cables that are thin in diameter can be cut easier than thicker diameter cables.  Many popular firearms may not have a place to thread a cable lock through, such
as over-under and side-by-side longarms (see our GL770 & GL777 Cable Locks).  Many firearms may be VERY difficult and time consuming to thread the cable through or can cause damage to the cable covering when installing.

EASY TO DETERMINE HOW TO REMOVE CABLE LOCKS FROM THE FIREARM
An unauthorized user with no experience in defeating locks can easily look at a cable lock and determine that if the cable is cut, the lock can be removed.  Depending on the determination of the unauthorized user, this obvious defeat method may encourage cutting attempts.   The obviousness of how to physically remove a trigger lock may not exist.

ALL cable locks can be cut.  Even though cable locks that are California approved are tested to deter cutting, these cables are still vulnerable to being cut depending on many factors.  Additionally, the diameter of the cable is limited because of the small openings in the firearm that they are threaded through.  The smaller the diameter of the cable may lead to easier methods of cutting.

CABLE COVER CAN BE DAMAGED
Cable locks generally come with a rubber or plastic type covering over the cable.  Depending on the firearm that the lock is being installed on, the cable covering may become ripped, torn or frayed rather easily.  If damage to the cable cover were to occur, small bits and pieces can become deposited inside of the firearm.  It is recommended that the lock be replaced if damage to the cable cover occurs.  Pro-Lok cable locks come with a thick quality cable cover to reduce the chances of damaging the cable cover.

VISUALLY THE CABLE APPEARS LOCKED WHEN IT MAY NOT BE
Many cable locks use springs inside of the lock.  When the user inserts the end of the cable into the lock body, the cable may appear secure when it may not be.  Pro-Lok cable locks are designed without the use of springs and the key can only be removed when the cable is removed from the lock body or fully secured in the lock body.

INERTIA EFFECT / BOUNCING THE LOCK OPEN
Some locks that use springs may bounce or pop open when dropped or struck against another object.  Pro-Lok cable locks do not use any springs and are deadbolt locked.  Our exclusive double-sided deadbolt design eliminates the “inertia effect”

WARNING: Our cable locks will not fit all firearms.  Our trigger locks may not be appropriate to be used in all homes or under all conditions.  It is important to read and follow the detailed instructions, warnings and inspection procedures included with each lock as well as the manual supplied with your firearm.  This lock is only one part of safe firearm safety and storage.  This lock is not a substitute for safe firearm handling or complete safe storage.  Always store the firearm in an inaccessible place from children.  Always store your firearm unloaded.  Always store your ammunition in a separate locked container, in a different location than your firearm.

This is a California approved firearms safety device that meets the requirements of
California Penal Code Section 12088 and the regulations issued thereunder.

WARNING:  Using a gun lock or attempting to install a gun lock on a loaded firearm may result in the firearm discharging which may cause serious injury or death.  Completely unload the firearm per the firearm manufacturers instructions prior to installing any gun lock.
