TRIGGER LOCKS - GENERAL INFORMATION, PROS & CONS

GENERAL PURPOSE & USE
Trigger locks are the most commonly known and referred to devices to deter access to firearms.  Trigger locks are usually a clam shell device that covers the trigger and are intended to deter access by preventing access to the firearm trigger.   We realize that different users have different wants and needs when storing their firearm.  It is our belief that if you provide the firearm user with a product that does not fit their needs, the firearm owner will not use the product.  Further, if we provide the firearm owner with options that better suits their needs, the firearm owner is more likely to be willing to use the product.  Although our trigger locks have multiple options and features, the firearm owner can choose to use the features that are important to them.

PRIMARY PROS
IT IS NOT EASY TO DETERMINE HOW TO REMOVE TRIGGER LOCKS FROM THE FIREARM
An unauthorized user with no experience in disabling locks can easily look at a cable lock and determine that if the cable is cut, the lock can then be easily removed.  This is not true with our trigger locks.  The physical strength of Pro-Lok trigger locks exceeds most external firearm safety devices.  The size, weight, steel dowel pins and internal steel plates offer additional deterrence against physical attacks.  Because the trigger lock is attached to the trigger guard of the firearm, the firearm itself offers additional strength and support for the lock.

 VISUAL DETERRENCE
An unauthorized user can easily see that the firearm is locked.  Visual deterrence alone will deter

many undetermined unauthorized users from attempting to gain access to the firearm..

A TRIGGER LOCK CAN BE USED ON MANY FIREARMS THAT A CABLE LOCK CANNOT.
Many firearms do not have a cavity that a cable lock can be threaded through or threaded through easily.
A trigger lock can be used on many of these firearms.

PRIMARY CONS
ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE
A trigger lock can be accidentally installed on a loaded firearm.  The firearm owner MUST check the firearm visually and physically to insure the firearm is unloaded before installing the trigger lock.  Many trigger locks can be shifted on the firearm after installation.  Depending on the firearm, the shifting of the lock can discharge the firearm if the firearm was not properly unloaded. (Pro-Lok trigger locks incorporate moveable steel pins to deter this occurrence, see below “Customizable” for more information)

A TRIGGER LOCK CANNOT BE USED ON MANY FIREARMS.
Many trigger locks are very small and may not properly cover the trigger or trigger guard assembly of the firearm.  Pro-Lok trigger locks are larger than most trigger locks and properly cover firearms that some trigger locks may not.

PRO-LOK’s CUSTOMIZED FIT
There are thousands of firearm configurations that vary in trigger guard sizes, shapes, trigger shapes, trigger sizes & locations that are all variable parts and differ from firearm to firearm.  It would be impossible for one trigger lock to fit every firearm perfectly.  However, Pro-Lok innovated the concept of movable dowel pins that may adjust the lock to fit most firearms more securely than generic style trigger locks.
This feature is illustrated in our first of many patents awarded to us from the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. Our trigger locks have a series of holes on the interior face of the lock.  After the firearm is placed on the lock for the first time, the user places rubber coated steel dowel pins on the inside and the outside of the trigger guard.  The proper placement of the pins is intended to sandwich the trigger guard to prevent the lock from sliding in different directions on the firearm.  One or more dowel pins are also placed behind the trigger.  This is intended to prevent the trigger from being depressed when the dowel pins are properly placed and the lock is properly installed on the firearm. This process may take a couple of minutes, but you will have a safety device that fits your firearm properly and securely in most cases.

PRO-LOK’s ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE CABLE
Our GL550 and GL650 trigger locks include an .275 diameter accidental discharge cable that can be used on many larger caliber firearms (not all).  The cable is threaded through the action of the firearm to insure the firearm is unloaded.  The ends of the cable are then attached to the inside face of the trigger lock.  The use of this cable is optional but recommended when possible and may prevent accidental discharge. A longer length cable is available upon request.

STEEL LOCKING POST
Most trigger locks use die-cast locking posts and/or latching designs.  Pro-Lok trigger locks feature steel locking and latching designs.  We are confident that our steel designs will provide the durability & strength desired in a lock.

CABLE SECURED
Our trigger locks will accommodate a cable that can be attached to a special “cable pin” located on the interior face of the lock.  One end of the cable is secured on the trigger lock and the other end of the cable is secured to a stationary object of your choice, such as a piece of furniture or shelf.  The advantage of this feature is twofold:

If a child were to find your firearm, the cable may prevent them from removing the firearm and taking the firearm to another location to play with or attempt to remove the lock.

The cable may prevent your firearm from being stolen.  A burglar usually is in a hurry and only in your home for minutes.  The extra work required to steal your firearm may make a difference in your firearm being stolen or not.

Cables are available in different diameters, colors and length.  Because of the variables and choices of cables available, the cable is not supplied with the lock.  Depending on your individual situation and needs, the proper length and diameter cable can easily be purchased at home centers, bicycle stores or mass merchants.

WARNING: Our trigger locks will not fit all firearms.  Our trigger locks may not be appropriate to be used in all homes or under all conditions.  It is important to read and follow the detailed instructions, warnings and inspection procedures included with each lock as well as the owners manual supplied with your firearm.  This lock is only one part of safe firearm safety and storage.  This lock is not a substitute for safe firearm handling or complete safe storage.  Always store the firearm in an inaccessible place from children.  Always store your firearm unloaded.  Always store your ammunition in a separate locked container in a different location than your firearm.

WARNING:  Using a gun lock or attempting to install a gun lock on a loaded firearm may result in the firearm discharging which may cause serious injury or death.  Completely unload the firearm per the firearm manufacturers instructions prior to installing any gun lock.
