GENERAL PRO & CON REFERENCE CHART OF CA. FIREARM SAFETY DEVICES

Type of locking

devices in general.

PRIMARY PROS

PRIMARY CONS

(VERY GOOD)
CABLE LOCK

(Non CA approved locks may have additional cons)

Offers good visual deterrence.

Offers good physical deterrence

Cannot be installed on a loaded firearm when used properly.

Low cost. Aprox $7 - $13 retail

It is obvious to most unauthorized users that cutting the cable is a logical method to remove the lock.

The cable can be cut with some tools that can vary from tool to tool and person to person.

Cannot be used on many firearms including but not limited to Over-Under and Side-by-side longarms (Except our GL770 & GL777 longarm cable locks)

(VERY GOOD)
TRIGGER
LOCK

(Non CA approved locks may have additional cons)

Offers excellent visual deterrence.

Offers excellent physical deterrence.

Low cost. Aprox $12 - $14

Can be used on most firearms including Over-Under and Side-by-Side longarms.

Cannot be used on all firearms.

Can be installed accidentally on a loaded firearm if our accidental discharge cable is not used.

(VERY GOOD)
LEVER ACTION BRACKET

Used with our GL650 trigger lock.

Deters attempts to pull the hammer back.

Deters attempts to pull the lever down.

Can only be used on lever action firearms.

Can be installed accidentally on a loaded firearm.

Cannot be used on all lever action firearms.

(BETTER)

CABLE LOCK

TRIGGER LOCK

(used on the same firearm)

Using both our CA. approved trigger lock with our CA. approved cable locks will provide all the PROS for both locks.

Additional visual deterrence.

Two separate keys would be required.

Short of a Gun box or a Gun safe, this combination of locks will offer you additional deterrence that is preferred.  If one lock were to fail or be disabled, the other lock is still intact. Additional time would be needed to disable both locks.

Cost would be $19-$27 typically. This cost is still very reasonable for the added deterrence provided but is still more expensive than one lock or the other.
(BEST)
GUN SAFE BOX

The firearm is completely enclosed.

Other personal items may be secured in the same box.

Pro-Lok brand safe boxes include a separate steel lock box to store ammunition. Ammunition should always be stored in a separate locked container.

Only good for hand guns because of the small size.
(THE VERY BEST)
GUN SAFE

(Full size)

The most secure storage method of  storage. Burglary protection is provided on a good quality safe that is U.L. rated.

Fire protection is optional.

A good safe can be expensive from a cost standpoint. However, the protection and safety they provide you may be considered cheap.

WARNING: This chart is intended for general reference purposes only and the PROS and CONS are of our opinion only.  There may be other pros and cons that our not included in this chart.  Never install a lock or store a firearm loaded.  Many firearms with various shaped or custom parts may prevent some locks from fitting your firearm properly.
