TIPS ON CHOOSING THE SAFETY DEVICE BEST FOR YOU

No lock, including ours, can offer 100% protection against all attempts to bypass the lock to gain access to your firearm. No lock, including ours, by itself, makes your firearm safe.  As with the lock on your home or even a bank, a lock or safety device is only one means of deterrence.  It is often said that if someone wants to break into your home they will.  However, this does not prevent you from locking your front door. Wearing your seat belt in your car does not guarantee that you won’t get injured in an accident, but it helps in most cases.  As such, your firearm safety device is an important part, but only one component of, safe firearm storage.  Simply hiding your unlocked firearm is not a reliable or responsible means of safely storing your firearm.

A SAFE IS ALWAYS THE BEST PROTECTION
There is no question that the best and safest means of storing a firearm is in a safe. Pro-Lok has attempted to balance the wants, needs and budgets in designing our firearm safety devices.  Only you can determine which device and means of storage is best for you.  When choosing a device, it is always best to purchase a safety device that is higher than what you may feel that you need.  Consider your future needs also. Will your needs change?

NO ONE LOCK IS PERFECT, INSPECTION IS IMPORTANT!
Because firearms vary in shape, size, accessories and individual characteristics, no lock is perfect for every firearm. It is of major importance and your responsibility to inspect and verify that the safety device that you choose properly fits your firearm. Some of the common inspections should include, visually and physically inspect that the lock fits securely on your firearm. Visually check that the lock completely covers your trigger guard (trigger locks). If a cable lock is used, will the installation and removal of the lock tear or damage the cable covering?

IMPORTANT COMPONENTS OF SAFE FIREARM STORAGE:
This  list may not be complete and your individual needs and/or environment may require additional storage needs.

• Always store your firearm locked & unloaded.

• Store your ammunition in a separate locked container and store in a different location.

• Store your locked and unloaded firearm in a generally inaccessible location to unauthorized users.

• Control your keys, do not store your keys with the firearm.

• Read & follow all safety information provided with your firearm and gun lock.

COMMON CONSIDERATIONS:
YOUR HOUSEHOLD

Consider your home environment as the most important consideration when choosing a device to store your firearm.

Different households may require different storage needs.  Do you have small children, teenagers, no children, or do you have troubled teenagers or others that live in your household?  Do you have guest or visitors to your house, and if so, how often?  Do you live in a neighborhood where you feel threatened or do you feel safe and comfortable where you live?

CHILDREN
If one of your considerations is that your children have been taught safe firearm handling you should also consider that your children may act differently with their friends when you are not around. If your children have been well trained and you are comfortable with them, what about their friends that may visit?

BUDGET
What is your budget? You can expect to spend from:
$7.00 - $14.00 on approved cable locks and trigger locks.
$125.00 - $170.00 on small gun safes/boxes.
Up to several thousand for a full size U.L. rated gun safe.
The level of protection, security and convenience varies from device to device.

INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCE.
Some people prefer trigger locks while others prefer cable locks.  Large gun safes may be preferable while small gun boxes may be adequate.  How and when you plan on using your firearm is another important consideration.

WARNING:  Using a gun lock or attempting to install a gun lock on a loaded firearm may result in the firearm discharging which may cause serious injury or death. Completely unload the firearm per the firearm manufacturers instructions prior to installing any gun lock.
