COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT GUN LOCKS

WILL THE USE OF A LOCK PREVENT ACCESS TO MY FIREARM?
No!  Not in all cases.  Similar to the use of a lock on the front door of your home, a lock is used for deterrence purposes but given time, tools and determination the lock will not prevent access in all cases.  Because of this fact, the use of any firearm safety device is but one component of safe firearm storage.  The use of a lock may prevent access from small children and depending on the lock may deter access from some unauthorized users, including older children and some adults. If nothing else, a good device may require additional time to disable. The extra time and effort that may be required may provide valuable time for the unauthorized user to cool off, regain their composure from a weak mental moment, re-think their intentions or become discovered in their attempts.

"IF SOMEBODY IS DETERMINED TO DEFEAT THE LOCK THEY WILL"
This may be true, but a good lock may slow them down and may deter access from the not so determined.

If somebody is determined to break into your house they can, but you still lock your door.

"MY KIDS HAVE BEEN TAUGHT NOT TO TOUCH MY FIREARM!"
It is doubtful that there is one firearm owner who has had their firearm used in a tragic incident who prior to the incident imagined that their children would have touched or used the firearm.  I doubt that there is one of them who after knowing what happened would not have stored their firearm differently.  Teaching your children is a very important component of firearm safety but is not a substitute for safe firearm storage.

DO I NEED A LOCK ON MY FIREARM?
Every firearm owner is encouraged and is responsible to safely store their firearms.

WHICH TYPE OF LOCKING DEVICE SHOULD I USE?
Short of a U.L. listed gun safe, it would be impossible to generically say which type of firearm storage device is best for your home. Choosing the appropriate device and method that is best for your individual situation is largely dependent upon a number of factors that YOU should consider carefully.  Your deciding factors may vary but we have listed some of the most common factors that should be considered below.

If an external locking device is chosen, we strongly recommend the use of both a trigger lock and a cable lock. Each type of lock offers different benefits. The use of both devices will offer additional deterrence and the benefits that both types of locks offer will be received. The small investment in both types of locks would be considered a very small price if an accident or tragedy is prevented.

DO I NEED ANOTHER LOCK IF MY FIREARM HAS A BUILT IN INTERNAL LOCK?
If there is no lock on your door, it may be considered an invitation for the sometimes curious to enter.

If your firearm is only equipped with an internal lock, an unauthorized user may be unaware that the firearm is locked. The appearance of an unlocked firearm may encourage an unauthorized user or curious individual to handle, play with or take the firearm.

The visual appearance of an external lock installed on your firearm is an important deterrent and is one component of safe firearm storage.  Many unauthorized users will not attempt to play with a firearm or attempt to remove the lock to gain access to the firearm because they visually see that the firearm is locked.  For this reason, even if your firearm is equipped with an internal locking device built into the firearm, we strongly believe the use of an external locking device is always an important component of safe firearm storage

IS THERE ONE LOCKING DEVICE THAT CAN BE USED ON ALL FIREARMS?
There is no one external locking device that will work on or should be considered appropriate for all firearms.

CAN I USE AN EXTERNAL LOCKING DEVICE ON A LOADED FIREARM?
We NEVER would recommend or encourage your firearm to be stored loaded.  Discharge can occur causing injury or death.

WHICH IS BETTER, A TRIGGER LOCK OR A CABLE LOCK?
Do your own research and make your own decision that is best for your needs and situation.  If you decide that an external lock is to be used, we offer the following suggestions for your consideration:

If unauthorized physical removal attempts is the primary concern
, we generally suggest our trigger lock.
If accidental discharge is the primary concern
, we generally suggest our cable lock.
If
unauthorized physical removal and accidental discharge are of equal concern, we suggest the use of both a trigger lock and cable lock or a gun box for hand guns.

WARNING:  Using a gun lock or attempting to install a gun lock on a loaded firearm may result in the firearm discharging which may cause serious injury or death. Completely unload the firearm per the firearm manufacturers instructions prior to installing any gun lock.
